FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are there prerequisite skills needed for completing the P-ESL certfification training? Do I have the right background?

The Compton P-ESL certification training events are designed by and for speech-language pathologists or any speech professional who has experience using the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). Training participants should also meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • a Master’s degree or 3 years experience practicing in speech pathology
  • 3 years experience as a certified ESL instructor
  • completion of a college-level course in phonetics
  • current enrollment at graduate student level in a speech pathology/communication disorders program

You are strongly encouraged to review the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols relevant to American English prior to attending the Compton P-ESL workshop. Start here, at the University of Iowa’s Phonetics page.

Will I receive Continuing Education credit for completing a training event?

In general, participants of the Compton P-ESL workshop will receive 1.5 CEUs (15 hours) from ASHA.
Marketing Essentials workshop participants will receive .7 CEUs (7 hours) from ASHA. However receiving continuing education credit is based on your having satisfied the following requirements:

1. Attending all hours of training
2. Submitting your ASHA account number to the instructor at the training event
3. Paying yearly ASHA dues (CEU credit is conditionally awarded until ASHA paid dues have been verified)
4. Paying the annual ASHA CE Registry fee

ASHA allows 4 – 5 weeks of processing time for CEU recommendations. All training participants who are active ASHA members are recommended for the appropriate number of CEUs. Please contact ASHA for additional questions about applying your attendance at ILPs training events toward your CEU credits.

While ILP-TD is not specifically certified by individual states as a CEU provider, most states accept CEU credits from our workshops since we are approved by ASHA. If you have any questions about whether your state-licensing agency will accept CEUs from an ILP-TD workshop, we recommend that you contact them prior to attending the workshop. More info on the CE Registry can be found on ASHA’s CE Registry page.

Can I contact previous ILP workshop attendees?

Trainers who are certified in the P-ESL method of accent modification and who welcome referral inquiries have their contact info published in the AccentLink directory.

When will I receive my P-ESL course materials, and what will I get?

You will receive your course materials on the first day of your workshop. Upon checking in at the training event, you’ll be given:

  • the Compton P-ESL Trainer’s manual (120+ pp.)
  • the P-ESL Client Manual, containing all of the practice material needed by the individuals you’ll be training
  • 1 marketing brochure prototype
  • 5 copies of the P-ESL Phonological Assessment with an instruction manual, stimulus booklet and 5 assessment scoring booklets (to be used with your first 5 clients)
  • 1 P-ESL screening kit

Once I’ve completed the certification training, what additional products or services will I need to deliver accent modification instructional services?

The Institute of Language and Phonology offers a full line of business building and marketing products to help build your accent modification practice. These products can be purchased at our workshops or through our website. There are no minimum purchase requirements, so you can purchase as little or as much material as you need to build your practice.

To be most effective, you’ll be encouraged to purchase a high quality voice recorder. Recommendations and demonstrations will take place during the training event, but there will not be any sales pressure directed at workshop partcicpants. Many workshop attendees already have the necessary equipment. The tools of the professional speech trainer trade, however, will be ono display at the wokshop. If you have questions about which products would be most helpful to you, we encourage you to speak with your workshop facilitator.

Your P-ESL clients will be expected to purchase course materials. Certified P-ESL instructors typcally make these materials available to their clients by purchasing them from the ILP Research Division, and including the cost in the fee for their professional services. Each individual trainer decides whether he or she will add the cost of the the client materials to the training fee or include them as part of their training package.
