Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need previous experience in accent modification?
No. The course begins with foundational concepts and progresses through assessment and instruction. We recommend that participants have approximately three years of professional experience in a field related to communication, language instruction, coaching, education, or professional training. Common backgrounds include speech-language pathology, ESL/TESOL instruction, linguistics, drama, voice, and communication coaching. Professionals from other backgrounds may also be appropriate candidates depending on their experience and career goals. Documentation or proof of experience is not required.
Q: Is this appropriate for experienced clinicians?
Yes. Experienced SLPs and those in related professions new to accent modification will benefit from the structured instructional framework.
Q: How long do I have access?
You will have one year (365 days) of access to all course materials.
Q: Do I receive a certificate?
After successfully completing the course requirements, a certificate documenting your status as an instructor who has completed the P-ESL Method course is available on request at no cost.
Q: Are client practice programs included?
No. Information about the optional Client Practice Programs is provided after successfully completing the course examination. The certification course contains the instructional methodology needed to begin teaching; the Client Practice Programs are optional implementation packages for instructors who want a ready-to-use client curriculum. Purchase details can be found at ajcomptonpesl.com.
Q: I am not a speech-language pathologist. Does my background qualify under your 3-year professional experience requirement? Do you need explicit evidence of experience?
A: Not necessarily. While many participants in the P-ESL Certification Course are speech-language pathologists, the course has also been completed by professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our recommended guideline is that participants have at least three years of professional experience in a field related to teaching, training, coaching, communication, or language instruction. Common backgrounds include:
- ESL/EFL/TESOL instructors
- English language teachers
- Linguistics instructors
- Speech-language pathologists
- Drama and acting coaches
- Voice and communication coaches
Over the years, participants have also come from less traditional backgrounds. For example, one participant was a law enforcement officer exploring career transition options involving accent and pronunciation instruction. You are not required to submit proof, documentation, or any other evidence of your professional experience when enrolling in the course. The three-year professional experience guideline is intended to help prospective participants determine whether the course is appropriate for their background and career goals.
If you are unsure whether your background is appropriate for the course, feel free to contact us before enrolling. We’ll be happy to discuss your experience and help you determine whether the P-ESL Certification Course is a good fit for your professional goals.
